In the 1970s the Hanover Shoe moved to a new, more modern building on Elm Street near McSherrystown. The buildings on Carlisle Street were abandoned and left to the harsh treatment of mother nature and vandals. Despite the solid appearance of the brick exterior the interior was made up completely of wood. Once the roof started to leak it would only be a matter of time before enough support beams rotted away and the building would collapse. Vandals also had their share, breaking bathroom fixtures and many of the buildings exterior windows. The photos below were taken in April of 1996. In some of the photos you can see that the small two story building behind the main building had already collapsed.
